Dear Mr. McKee:
\J
I enjoyed our conversation Wednesday; I \F3do\F1 hope we can work out an
agreement with Perkin-Elmer to
develop a quality LISP for their family of machines.
As I mentioned, I tried some time ago --fall of 1979-- to interest P-E in
my LISP efforts. I submitted a summary of potential markets for
LISP and its application in Artificial Intelligence (AI), along with
and a proposal to develop LISP. At that time, P-E was putting their
marketing efforts in other directions than AI. With the growing
commercialization of AI, and P-E's sustained efforts to impact on DEC's
market, as well as my need/desire for better development tools,
it occurred to me that this may be a good time to re-open the issue.
I should mention that the appearance of your Group also prompted
my action; that P-E is now listening to a UNIX voice in its ear,
may show a
growing sense of enlightenment.
When I was previously dealing with P-E, they were
just considering a licensing agreement for UNIX. At that time I was consulting
with a group at Santa Clara University, that was looking for a departmental
machine; the 3220 looked promising, but the lack of adequate software
was a substantial drawback.
I realize that both LISP and I dropped in on you unannounced.
Though LISP has been
around as a research tool for over twenty years, it is only recently
that it has begun to attract attention in industrial circles.
Therefore, I am enclosing
an overview of how LISP and its applications
can lead to commercially viable
products. I am also enclosing a copy of my resume; I too have been around
for more than twenty years, and have invested a substantial committment
in developing quality LISP tools as a first-step towards
AI-based products for commercial and educational applications.
Perhaps you could pass pertinent parts of these documents on to relevant
P-E personnel. If you or they have any questions or wish further clarification,
please don't hesitate to contact me.
